Satyendra Misra Memorial recital (sponsored by MHCMS patron, Manju Misra)
Pt Sugato Nag - Sitar
We are pleased to present a mesmerising Hindustani classical Surbahar and Sitar recitals by a true maestro, Pt Sugato Nag.
Sugato ji comes from a long line of Sitarists in a Sarod Gharana. He began learning music from Shri Anil Roychoudhuri, a senior disciple of the legendary Pt Radhika Mohan Moitra (Radhubabu), and then Radhubabu himself after the death of Shri Roychoudhuri. He eventually found his place with another of Radhubabu's disciples, the iconic Pt Buddhadev Dasgupta, and thus began the long journey of arduous training and relentless riyaz, that helped mature Sugato ji into the musician that he is today. Sugato ji has retained the playing style of the Etawah Gharana that Radhubabu so carefully followed and preserved, and also infused his Sitar with intricate bol (rhythm) baaz inherited from the Sarod, that is typical of the Shahjahanpur Gharana. Sugato ji has performed extensively including in India at the Sangeet Research Academy, The Dover Lane Music Conference, Ramakrishna Mission Music Festival, ITC SRA Sangeet Sammelan, Sangeet Natak Academy, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sangeet Mahabharti, Mumbai, and touring across US, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Holland, Japan, and Australia. He is a regular performer on various Indian radio and television channels. Sugato ji lives in Kolkata, India from where he continues to teach students to carry the tradition of the Gharana, and also reach out to the world with his lovely music. More details can be found on his website. Accompanying Sugatoi ji will be Jay Dabgar, a Melbourne-based Tabla player, born into a family of tabla makers, who has tabla for almost 18 years from his Gurus Late Pt. Nandan Mehta and Pt. Pooran Maharaj at the famous Saptak School Of Music, India. Jay has accompanied many great artists and has won National level competitions in India. More about Jay here. About Satyendra Misra - The founding President of Melbourne Hindustani Classical Music Society in 2017, whose love for Hindustani classical music was infectious, and vision continues to inspire us.
