Melbourne has a vibrant Hindustani classical music scene. Over the past 25 years, a surprising number of talented and knowledgeable Hindustani classical musicians have moved to Melbourne from overseas and interstate. Pioneers such as Dr. Adrian McNeil, Shri Mohindar Dhillon, Shri Radheyshyam Gupta (Order of Australia Medal for his contributions to Hindustani classical music), Shrimati Deepika Shom, Shrimati Sheela Sharma, Late Shri Hanumant Umranikar, Ustad Aminul Haq, Shri Ratan Mulchandani, Shri Glen Kneibiss, Shri Ajit Nimbkar, Shri Khalil Gudaz, Shri Vinod Prasanna, Shri Sabyasachi Bhattacharya and Shri Parag Kaole have taught, performed and/or organised classical music performances, which has in-turn created a dedicated body of discerning, appreciative listeners. We are grateful for their untiring efforts.
We have created the Melbourne Hindustani Classical Music Society to bring the experience of this sublime art form to the wider Melbourne community. We aim to consolidate the efforts of the past, and create a vibrant platform for local and visiting artists to perform at premium Melbourne venues as well as in traditional “Baithak” style gatherings at people’s homes. It is our earnest desire to see our passion shared by the mainstream Melbourne community.

We organise recitals in one of two formats
- Recitals held at concert-grade venues, open to the general public
- Recitals and/or workshops held at private residences - Home based recitals are one of the best ways to experience Hindustani classical music, both for the audience and performers. Home based recitals are available to MHCMS patrons.
